Why organize?
The lives of working people are becoming more difficult over time. We live in a world dominated by corporations and bosses. In their never ending quest for profits, it is the bosses who have created this worsening situation. It is the bosses who need us to work longer, harder, faster and for less pay. What the bosses want is workers with all of the experience, skills and knowledge, but also completely interchangeable and disposable.
What the workers need is in opposition to what the employers want.
What the workers need is in opposition to what the employers want. We need higher pay, shorter hours, and safe work. We need more control over what goods we produce, what services we provide, and how these things are done. We need more control over the effects of industry on our health, and on the health and safety of our neighbourhood. We want a safe and healthy place for children to grow up in, and the possibility of a good, fulfilling life for them. We want everything the employers need us not to have. Our interests are simply bad for their business. What we want and need is to be truly free and in control of our own lives, the resources, the machines, the decision making process. We want our workplaces run for the benefit of the workers, not for the handful of bosses and shareholders.
It is for these reasons that the preamble of the Constitution of the IWW begins with “The working class and the employing class have nothing in common.”
The way we get what we want is through organizing at our jobs, and helping others organize at theirs, and across all industries. Our weapons aren't guns or bombs. Our weapons are education, organization, solidarity and the many and various methods of withholding our labour. We fight with our arms folded. Through organization, we can fight for our interests in solidarity, and build a new, more fair and healthy world for everyone, in the shell of the old.
Let’s break the cycle of hopelessness and make a difference together.
